If you’re exploring the MTB opportunities in and around Billings, this brief post will get you started with a fantastic way to explore a lot of ground and get some exercise too. Over the last 15 years that I’ve lived in Billings, the access to mountain biking has increased exponentially! In addition, the growing paved trail system has improved and expanded every year. Connecting the two with a mountain bike is the fun part.
For info and all bicycle topics, join the Billings Area Cycling Network (BACN - pronounced: bacon) Google Group. You can get up-to-date trail conditions, buy or sell bikes, and immerse yourself in the Billings bicycle universe.
A great starter trail that never gets old is Zimmerman Park because it’s close to town, has ample parking, and has fantastic views of Billings from the top of the Rims. Another easy-access blue single track is the Middle Rim trail runs from the airport to Zimmerman Park. A little farther out Mold Road is Phipps Park which features a fun flowing trail loop to the south of the plateau hilltop.
Of course, one of the top destinations around is the Acton Recreation Area mountain bike trail system. Located about 25 miles north of Billings on Hwy 3, this spot offers superbly crafted trails for every level of rider. Multiple trails like Tumbleweed and Rollercoaster run mostly downhill, then connect to an easy uphill on a fire road to complete a loop. Excellent maps at the parking area and trail signage along the way make for an easy and super fun experience. And it’s all BLM land, with some improved campsites, if you want to stay over!
